I love to surf, but my friends online don’t know this, only my friends IRL. I love the beach and beach culture, here or in France. I live in Goleta, which is just north of Santa Barbara, and an art studio north of here.
These videos show some really frightening, gigantic, huge, humongous, completely out-of-control waves, and men (and some women) surfing them. This is not for children.
Of the great surfing beaches I found videos of, the one nearest to me is Mavericks, west of Half Moon Bay. All of the beaches below are world famous. Mavericks waves are fat, and moving big water; and the curl is often flattened out by this. They can be as big as 50 feet (15.24 meters).
The big waves in Hawaii are probably the most famous. Hawaii here means any of the islands in the group. So, here are a few videos of great waves and rides. I’ve never been there, but would like to go someday.
The Hawaiian waves are known for their great beauty and excellent curl.
Some people have said that the Australian waves have the best curl. This video was shot when, in 2015, some huge Indian Ocean swells reached Australian shores. Very powerful and unusual waves, look for the multiple waves with multiple curls overlapping each other.
This video shows a selection of mammoth, hugely gigantic waves from around the world.
These aren’t just monster waves; I looked for the videos with the best music and the best footage combined. Some of the rejected videos were not HQ, or were too hard to see, or were too long, or too commercial.
Some of the videos have more shorebreaks, wipeouts, or close-up footage. Check this one out. Remember that waves this violent can be harmful or fatal.
Another Top 10 with waves from around the world. With all these videos, watch very closely to see the surfer and his ride. I watch them over and over.
So, saved the best for last. These incomprehensible monsters are from Nazaarre’, Portugal. The biggest surfing waves in the world.
This first one was edited by the video editors to appear very dark, full of dark greys and black. I did not edit the video.
So, I thought we could bring the intensity down and start to relax a little, after all those monstrous waves, with some surf videos of a more relaxing kind.
In this one, the musicians are Ali Farka Toure’ and Ry Cooder.
The last two are just for fun: Pacific Grade. Of course, they still have HQ surfing in them!
